Layers of brief text accompanying the collages are etched on Plexiglass. The exhibit presentation is stark. Boxes are mounted on dirtflecked doors with rusty knobs that also come from old country farm houses. The collage images are a mixture of old and new photos, some of them made by Spangler, some from scrapbooks. It's show, multilayered and rooted in her past.

A 1973 graduate of Western Carolina University, Spangler taught at Marion Elementary School in Shelby for four years before she quit to have a family. After having two children, she ran a needlework design business for a while. Then she worked for the county arts council as an executive assistant. "I'd always had an interest and love of the arts," she says. "So I decided to go back to school." For years she drove to and from UNC Charlotte as a student.

In her senior painting class, she was assigned to do a body of work built around a single theme. This gave Spangler the idea for what later evolved into "Families A Southern Narrative." After graduating in 1996, she continued work on the same theme and got a grant from N.C. Arts Council through the Cleveland County Arts Council. Spangler remembered stories told by her father, Charles Knight, from his childhood days in Enoree, S.C. And her thoughts also drifted back to the black man who lived in a shed behind her grandparents' home in Enoree.

"He made a sound like 'ga-ga' and to me that was really fright- ARTIST Continued from page 1Y ening," Spangler recalls. "The only image I have is him sitting in a chair in the doorway of the shed behind the house." That image began to expand as she talked with her 84-year-old father. "Dummy" emerged a real person with a name and a past and a heart. Spangler traveled to South Carolina several times for interviews. She talked with a woman whose mother had known him.

"She said her momma could understand what he said with hand signs," Spangler says. "I guess it was some kind of shorthand. She said he was sweet-natured, kind and gentle." Spangler learned the man's name was Jesse Smith and that he'd lost his hearing as a child. She discovered that he'd lived on her great-grandparents' place a family connection she hadn't known before. And she also found out about the special relationship between Smith and her grandparents how they helped each other through good times and hard times as they grew old.

"Daddy said 'Dummy' had to be on the front row in heaven," Spangler says. "I now consider this man a part of my family." Spangler hasn't found any of Smith's relatives, but she turned up a photo of him among her father's scrapbooks. She had it blown up into a 46- by 70-inch enlargement, which anchors the exhibit. Other subjects in the show include an assortment of her relatives, whom Spangler treats with respect but frankness. "The exhibit is not sentimental," she says.

"And I don't tell you everything. I'm only giving you hints. I hope it's uplifting I hope it will be thought and that you take something away. But I'm not trying to preach." Reach Joe DePriest at (704) 868-7745 or GINGER SPANGLER Born: Oct. 28, 1950, Shelby.
