Alaska and Hawaii are not part of the contiguous USA. The other 48 states are contiguous. Contiguous means each state has a border with at least one other state. The 48 states stretch over four time zones. China uses only one time zone. Japan also only uses one. Think of them from west to east: Pacific Time, Rocky Mountain Time, Central Time, and Eastern Time. Pacific Time is the "west coast" of the US mostly. Rocky Mountain Time is from New Mexico to Wyoming and Montana (plus other western states). Central Time, like the name, is in the middle including most of the Great Plains and both sides of the Mississippi River. Eastern Time is the east coast. I think of it this way:
Pacific - coastal states mostly, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Rocky Mountains - Mountain states, Salt Lake City, Boise, Denver.
Central - New Orleans, most of Texas (Dallas), to Chicago.
Eastern - Atlanta, Florida, New York
